The urban cool, metro sexual Saif Ali Khan is back in a cool romantic role in Cocktail, with his recent super hits in the same genre like Hum Tum, Salaam Namaste, Kal Ho Na Ho and Love Aaj kal, Saif plays the character of Gautam a happy go lucky Delhi guy who loves women.
In her early twenties, Veronica (Deepika Padukone) is a wild-cat, impulsive, constantly looking for making her presence felt wherever she goes.
Meera (Diana Penty) who has been dumped and duped by Kunal Ahuja (Randeep Hooda), has just arrived in London. She is very desi at heart, and has just gone through this bad experience which has left her all clean up off her life-time savings. Once, late in the evening, in the washroom of a coffee shop Veronica notices a sobbing Meera, develops a soft corner for her and lets her stay at her pad.
Veronica and Meera live together during the summer in London. Both have different outlook in life. Meera is an introvert, recovering from a hoax, while Veronica is just the opposite, loud, impulsive and outgoing. They have a breezy time, both together, prancing about London and then it develops a bond among them.
Then Gautam (Saif Ali Khan) enters their lives and moves in with them. Gautam and Veronica believe in living for the moment. They do not believe in serious relationships.
The trio have a blast, live together and its fun and merry all around. It then becomes a beautifully balanced friendship between the three.
All of a sudden, Gautam realizes that he has to chose between Meera and Veronica. Being fickle minded about serious relationships in life, he decides to detach himself from these two girls.
It becomes lonely for him, and for Meera and Veronica, it is even worse.
What we have is a cocktail mixed with laughs, dances, songs, tears, stunning beaches and impressive performances from Deepika and Diana. Deepkia looks sizzling hot. The songs ‘Tumhi Ho Bandhu’, ‘Daaru Desi’ and ‘Yaariyaan’ are brilliantly picturised. Cocktail is targeted at GenNext.
It shows the hollow lifestyle of the west. Caught in between the Indian tradition and upbringing and on the other side the lifestyle of the west, there are moments of darkness in their lives. Moments of seperation, feeling lonely, and bouts of depression with themselves. Beautifully portrayed.
The intoxicating feeling of the first half which is a pleasure to watch, becomes a bit too hard with intricacies of relationships, in the latter.
